The official launch of the AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors programhttps://www.aaas.org/programs/center-public-engagement-science-and-technology/aaas-ifthen-ambassadors?utm_source=nicole&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=aaasambassadors&utm_content=announcement occurred on April 1, 2019, when the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) opened the application period for the AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors program which will bring together 100 women from a variety of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers to serve as high-profile role models for middle school girls.
As you know, STEM professionals use their skills in many fields - including entertainment, fashion, gaming, manufacturing, music, research and development, architecture, retail and technology. The AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors program will highlight women in STEM who are contributing to all these fields and more, to show girls the different career pathways they can pursue and how STEM impacts their lives every day.
This once in a lifetime opportunity to be an IF/THEN AAAS Ambassador may include (but is not limited to):

  • Participation in a summit which will empower AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors take their outreach to the next level. This dynamic and fun summit will include personal press kit development (photo shoots and videography), as well as coaching and support from specialists in science communication, public engagement, media, diversity and inclusion, and STEM education. Inspirational VIP guests will also participate in the summit.  Ambassadors will have the opportunity to not only build a strong network of other women STEM professionals, but also have a fun week and walk away with new skills and tools to tell their stories.
  • Online engagement with each other and with a wider network of experts who will build on the in-person summit, strengthening AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors' skills and supporting development of a community of dynamic women in STEM careers.
  • Opportunity to participate in a wide variety of media opportunities including original media content featuring women STEM professionals that will reach girls where they access content the most: on YouTube through partnerships with popular channels like GoldieBlox; on cable television shows; and on network television through a weekly series highlighting the STEM behind popular culture. In addition, the National Girls Collaborative Project will host a digital asset library that will provide access to photos and videos of AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador for nonprofit and educational use (i.e. museums and zoos across the country). These are just a few of the opportunities that we will have to offer...
  • Opportunity to connect directly with middle school girls in their classrooms, in informal science education settings such as AAAS's Family Science Days, museum exhibits about women in STEM professions, Girl Scouts of the USA programs, and on virtual platforms that allow AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors to have conversations with girls from across the United States.
See the attached executive summary and visit the program's websitehttps://www.aaas.org/programs/center-public-engagement-science-and-technology/aaas-ifthen-ambassadors?utm_source=nicole&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=aaasambassadors&utm_content=announcement to learn more about the program.
We need your help to spread the word and identify 100 dynamic women! If you know of an inspiring woman in your network who would make an incredible Ambassador, we encourage you to share the news about the AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors program with her. We are counting on you to help us find the very best STEM innovators! Let's work together to show girls everywhere how cool it is to be a woman in STEM.
The AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors Program will showcase women across a diverse range of STEM careers and we would love for women in STEM from the National Girls Collaborative Project network to apply.
Please reach out if you have questions or need additional information.  Thanks for your help in spreading the word.
