Hello National Champions,
This is an e-mail Amy Foster sent to local Collaborative leadership teams about managing their local Champions Boards. Since we often ask you to help our state teams recruit Champions Board members, I thought this would be helpful information. And, it also provides some additional perspective for you around the type of technical support we provide to our teams.
Brace yourself for next week's Anniversary activities! We are so excited to be celebrating 10 years of collaboration. Please help us engage more individuals and organizations in collaboration - and we'll try calm down and be a little more reserved in October. :)
Have a great Friday!
Karen

Collaborative Champions Boards
I. Definition/Purpose
The mission of the Champions Board is to champion the Collaborative in each board member's own realm. Champions Board members are selected to give the project a balance of desirable expertise and regional representation. They are chosen from among industry representatives, teacher educators, science and mathematics education representatives, educational policy experts, and leaders from girl-serving organizations.
Collaborative Champions Board meetings may be held in person, via phone, video conference or Web conference. Meetings should be held twice annually or more frequently depending on Collaborative needs. We recommend that one meeting each year be held in person to foster relationship building. The first Champions Board meeting should occur prior to hosting your Kick-Off Conference. Selecting and inviting Champions Board members early will assist you in building your Collaborative by providing valuable input and critical resources as project activities are planned.
The recommended size for a Collaborative Champions Board is between 10 and 20 members.
The ideal Champions Board members should have:
- A passion for the mission of the project.
- A record of involvement in a variety in organizations, educational backgrounds, and
geographic location.
- Visibility and a high profile.
- Access to resources.
- Access to constituents.
- Experience in equity work.
- Experience in girl-serving organizations.
Champions Board members may assist the Collaborative in the following ways:
- Promote the mission of the National Girls Collaborative Project and the Collaborative.
- Advise team members, providing expertise from their own content areas.
- Disseminate project information in their various networks.
- Develop strategic connections and opportunities for the Collaborative.
- Host a Collaborative event at their business or university and/or provide food, door prizes, or other event materials.
- Identify a speaker for a Collaborative event.
- Moderate a panel presentation at an event.
- Suggest potential project participants from their sector.
- Print programs for the Kick-Off or Collaboration Conference.

III. Strategies
-
Review the list of National NGCP Champions Board<http://www.ngcproject.org/about/champions-board> members and organizations. Do you see any organizations or companies that have a branch/chapter/affiliation in your area? National Champions Board members often connect Collaboratives to contacts and resources in local communities.
-
Have each Collaborative Leadership Team member recruit 1-3 Champions Board members from their personal and professional networks. Encourage Champions Board members to suggest others that may be powerful project partners.
-
Don't hesitate to ask busy people. Encourage Champions Board members to send another company or organization representative if they are unable to attend a Board meeting that can brief them on your efforts.
-
Identify passions and understand needs. Relationship building is critical to Collaborative engagement.
-
Be generous. Do you have a contact or resource that could assist a potential Champions Board member with a project or goal? Follow-up your conversation with an e-mail connecting them to people or resources in the area.
-
Discuss how the Collaborative can help support their personal and/or organizational goals and needs. If you are an experienced Collaborative, utilize your Collaborative Impact Report to showcase Collaborative impacts and successes. If you are a new Collaborative, utilize the National Evaluation Highlights<http://www.ngcproject.org/sites/default/files/documents/ngcp_evaluationsummary.pdf> and other white papers<http://www.ngcproject.org/ngcp-publications-0> to assist you in sharing project impact information.
